NOTE: | Severe fog problems in Heathrow made us
decide to leave the evening before planned and divert the flight via Vienna and Kuala Lumpur (for free). Fortunately we only lost about half a day, while it could have been up to several days when just popping up on the "normal" departure day!
Since birding and travelling went a bit faster than expected (especially in the south and Mt.Abu), we gained a few days regarding our initial plan. Therefore we decided to include the Nainital area in our itinerary. Although we saw
quite a lot of species there, we definitely could have used more time to track down the more difficult species. But we can't complain, it was a agreeable bonus after all... |
PRACTICALITIES Transport We tried to use public transport as much as possible. In the Southern part mainly by means of busses and (night)trains in the Northern part. It proved to be very easy to organize and book, fairly accurate and moderately comfortable (execpt for nightbusses, they are horrible). We always opted for sleeper class in the night trains. Averything has fixed prices and it's
very cheap! For on-the-spot transport we used riksja's and shared jeeps, while rather urgent transport was covered by private taxi's. Chennai - Madurai

Accomodation In most of the places there's plenty of accomodation available. Mostly it's decent and cheap except for the places where
you have to stay inside a NP (Corbett NP and Mudumulai). Between Christmass and New Year prices temporarily rise up extremely high, especially in the hill stations. VISITED SITES Below is a list of the sites we birded. Most of them are very well described in Kazmierczak´s "Birdwatcher´s Guide to India"
which is still of great value. Most other information was gathered via trip reports on internet and information shared on a variety of mailing lists. Munnar
The first area we birded was the Cardamon Shola. The small forested patch just outside the village produced our first
Nilgiri Wood-Pigeon and a few other birds. Continuing along the road through some plantations and a small village we arrived in the area around the Deshavan resort (SpiceValley). Here we had several more Wood-Pigeons and a very cooperative Malabar Whistling-Thrush. In the grasslands above the resort we tracked down 2 rather shy Broad-tailed Grassbirds and a few Nilgiri Pipits. Gray-breasted Laughingthrush proved to be rather common in the whole Munnar area.
Along the Bodi Ghat road we looked succesfully for the Yellow-throated Bulbul and saw a nice flock of our only Black-throated Munias. We also had Long-billed Sunbird, White-throated Bulbul, Rufous Babbler, etc.. The best spot proved to be downwards from the 9Km marker. In the Rajamalai park we easily spotted Nilgiri Pipits, White-bellied Shortwing (albiventris), the black resident subspecies of Eurasian Blackbird, Black-and-rufous Flycatcher and our only Lesser Kestrel.
Since we were too late on the road we didn't get the sought-after Painted Bush-Quail though... Thattekad
We decided not to go to Top Slip and Periyar since it seemed possible to get all the specialities in Thattekad. And so it
was. We stayed at the Jungle Bird Homestay of ___. He and his brother showed us the way around and offered transport and guidance to the Power Plant Dam. The forest right near the homestay produced many good birds like Ceylon Frogmouth, Gray Junglefowl, Malabar Gray Hornbill, White-bellied Treepie, Malabar Trogon amongst others. In the more open area near some kind of radio station a Mottled Wood-Owl was seen on its daytime roost as well as an obliging Blue
-bearded Bee-eater. The Urlanthany area holds much more bamboo stands and was good for White-bellied Blue-Flycatcher, Gray-headed Bulbulb, Crimson-backed Sunbird, etc. The area along the Idamalayar Power Plant Dam required intense seeking, but finally we picked up on the much wanted and elusive Wynaad Laughingthrush, a few Gray-headed Bulbuls, and some more Rufous Babblers. Southern Hill Myna was fairly common in this area, while Heart-spotted Woodpecker occured throughout the whole region.
Ooty
Don't spend your New Year's Eve in Ooty as it will be overran by a superabundance of Indians. This also makes accommodation is hard to find and all the prices are at least tripled. The small forested gully of the Cairnhill Forest still
vouches for goodies as White-bellied Shortwing (major), Rufous-breasted Laughingthrush, Scaly Thrush (future split) and Spot-breasted Fantail. A flying by Indian Spotted Eagle was an unexpeted bonus, while intensive searching yielded prolonged and close range views of a Tytler's Leaf-Warbler. We walked the Sigur Ghat Road in search for the missing Painted Bush-Quails and saw a 3 of them. A Scaly Thrush was flushed from the roadside. Mudumulai
We didn't go into the reserve itself as al the specialities can be easily seen around the villages. Just outside one of them (can't remember the name) we saw 2 Malabar Larks, Jerdon's Bushlark and some Yellow-wattled Lapwings on an arid field.
The more scrubby areas held Blue-faced and Sirkeer Malkohas, Jungle Prinia, plenty of Barred Buttonquails and a party of Jungle Bush-Quails, while the woodland parts reveiled a White-naped Woodpecker. Mysore
Allthough this city was just a stop over, we had some time to pay a visit to a roadside pool about 8 km south of the city since we spotted a group of Spot-billed Pelicans from the driving bus. On our return by taxi they gave short distance views. The next morning we had some more time before we had to travle North by train so we birded the Ranganatithu Reserve. We had 2 Great Thick-knees, Streak-throated Swallow and Sport-breasted Fantail. Great Rann of Kutch
This vast area close to the border of Pakistan is getting more known to birders. We decided to go there for the GIB instead of Jaisalmer. It proved to be rewarding as we did see the Great Indian Bustard, White-browed Bushchat (Lala GIB
sanctuary), White-winged Tit (Soneri Hills), Hypocolius (roost in Phulay), White-tailed Iora (Tera), Tawny Lark (several spots), Sykes' Nightjar (near a huge salt lake), White-bellied Minivet (Soneri Hills) etc. To get around here you definitely need a personal car and / or a guide. We got in contact with the friendly Mr. Arpit Deomuari (deomurari[at]gmail.com) in advance. See also his website. He guided us all the time. It might be very difficult finding the right spot for all the specialities just by yourself.
Mt.Abu
We visited this kitschy site in search for the Green Avadavat. We opted to try it here since we might be able to gain a full day in comparison to the site in Kumbalgarh. Moreover we had some accurate information from Arpit on where to look for this species. An annoying travelling day resulted in the hoped for Avadavats and extra time left over for the North. We
found the birds in the scrub just behind the "Little Nukki Lake". Stops en route (due to heated engine) produced Buff-bellied Warbler and Spot-breasted Fantail. Harike
This huge wetland holds millions of birds (cormorants, herons and egrets, ducks, terns, geese, ...) but also some good species. We didn't find any Pale-backed Pigeons amongst the thousands of feral pigeons though. The area behind the temple held good numbers of Sind Sparrow and White-crowned Penduline-Tits, a few Rufous-vented Prinias, etc. Corbett NP & surroundings
The Corbett NP is a well known tiger reserve were a lot of birds can we seen as well. Access on foot, however, is restricted to the campsite areas. Driving around with a rented a car (with driver) we saw some good birds like White-throated Bushchat (grasslands near Dikhala), Tawny Fish-Owl, Alexandrine Parakeet, Collared Falconet, Collared Owlet,
Nepal Martin, etc. More days were spent outside the park as there is the same forested habitat and one can walk around freely. In the Kumeria area (around the Quality Inn Hotel) we found an assisting Immaculate Wren-Babbler, roosting Tawny Fish-Owls, Little Forktail, etc. The Mohan area (near the Forktail Creek Camp) produced both Chestnut-headed and Gray-bellied Tesia, Great Hornbill, etc. And yes, we did see Tiger on both days, eventough we didn't look for it... Since we gained some time in the South we didn't plan to visit this area at all. During a short visit we still were able to find a good number of species. We concentrated on the area between Killbury-Nainital-Pangot which resulted in sightings of
Long-tailed Thrush, Scaly-bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-browed Tit, Black-faced Warbler, Whiskered Yufina, etc. At the scrubby area near Sat Tal we had Golden Bush-Robin, Black-throated and Rufous-breasted Accentor, Mountain Bulbul, etc. Lower down in the area close to the lake we had a large mixed species flock and a very cooperative Scaly-breasted Wren-Babbler. In the MongoliValley some nice species were seen like Long-billed Thrush, Slaty-backed Forktail and Brown
