India, Little Rann of Kutch: 26th - 28th November 2006

I had organized a trip for Dr. L. K. Yap and his son (shiwen yap) and daughter (yienli yap) coming to India for a conference on medical field. Actually they were very short on time as they have only 2 days for birding around Ahmedabad and previously they contacted me for Kutch and Great Rann of Kutch, but as time was not permitting to visit Kutch, I have suggested them to visit Little Rann of Kutch, Nal Sarovar and also Thol bird sanctuary.

Here is a brief report on the important sightings.

26-11-2006: Arrive at Ahmedabad by afternoon and departure for Dasada
27-11-2006: Dasada
28-11-2006: Afternoon departure for NAL Sarovar. By dinner time back to Ahmedabad

Highlights:

1. Thol Sanctuary: While leaving from ahmedabad we had visited Thol Sanctuary near sanand, Actually we were a bit late but still get good common cranes, cormorants, grey heron, egrets, ruddy shelduck, etc.

2. Little Rann of Kutch: We stayed at Rannriders at dasada. Our best sightings were 2 Sociable Lapwings (Vanellus gregarious) 25 km far from dasada. Day before we visited we had news of 27 individuals but we were luck to see only 2 of them. Another one was Merlin (Falco columbarius pallidus). We had also houbara bustard. And many herds of Asiatic Wild Ass. A pair of short eared owl in the middle of day in open grassland was a sight to remember.

3. Nal Sarovar: This year due to very good rain in gujrat, nal sarovar is full of water and thus not much birding, but some to mention are asian openbill, greylag goose, reed warblers etc.

While returning from this tour I stopped enroute for Indian Eagle Owl, and I got 5 juveniles (2 + 3) in nest and 6 Adults.
